Urgent care for serious dental infections and painful abscesses
Available 24/7 • Medicaid Accepted
Dental trauma caused by accidents, sports injuries, falls, or physical impact needs urgent care. Our skilled emergency team specializes in treating all types of dental and facial injuries—acting fast to control bleeding, preserve damaged teeth, and reduce the risk of serious complications.
DENTAL EMERGENCY: Facial swelling with fever may indicate a life-threatening infection. Seek immediate care.
Usually due to untreated tooth decay, trauma, or a cracked tooth that allows bacteria to reach the pulp.
Often linked to advanced gum disease (periodontitis) or a foreign object (e.g., food debris) trapped under the gum.
Typically results from food particles or plaque becoming trapped between the gum and tooth.
An infection that develops around a partially erupted wisdom tooth when bacteria become trapped beneath the gum flap covering the tooth.
A severe, rapidly spreading infection of the facial soft tissues. It can obstruct airways and requires urgent medical attention.
Immediate Triage & Stabilization
We begin by assessing your airway, breathing, and circulation to ensure safety. Vital signs are taken, and if a serious infection is suspected, IV antibiotics may be administered right away. Pain relief is provided immediately, and blood tests may be ordered to check for signs of sepsis if systemic symptoms are present.
Emergency Abscess Drainage
To relieve pressure and reduce pain, we perform a prompt incision and drainage of the abscess. This procedure removes accumulated pus and prevents the infection from spreading. In some cases, a small drain may be placed to allow continuous fluid drainage over the next few days.
Eliminating the Source of Infection
We treat the underlying cause of the abscess through root canal therapy, tooth extraction, or deep periodontal cleaning, depending on the situation. Addressing the root cause is essential—without it, the infection is likely to return even after drainage and antibiotics.
Targeted Antibiotic Therapy & Ongoing Monitoring
Antibiotics are prescribed based on the type and severity of the infection. We provide thorough follow-up care to monitor healing and confirm the infection has fully resolved. In more serious cases, hospitalization and continued IV antibiotics may be required.
Mild to moderate toothache
Trouble breathing or swallowing.
Heavy bleeding that doesn’t stop.
Possible fractures in the jaw or face.
Several teeth broken, knocked out, or severely .damaged
Facial swelling that spreads quickly.
Difficulty breathing or swallowing.
High fever and chills
Severe headache, eye pain, or blurred vision.
Rapid heart rate or drop in blood pressure.
Can I treat a dental abscess at home?
No. While you can manage some discomfort with over-the-counter pain relievers, saltwater rinses, or cold compresses, only a dentist can properly drain the abscess and treat the underlying cause. Home remedies cannot cure the infection.
Will I need antibiotics?
Yes, if the infection is moderate to severe or has spread. However, antibiotics alone won’t solve the problem—they must be combined with drainage and/or treatment of the source of the infection.
What happens during emergency abscess drainage?
Once the area is numbed, a small incision is made to release the built-up pus and relieve pressure, offering rapid pain relief. This procedure helps prevent the infection from spreading. The site is carefully cleaned, and in some cases, a temporary drain is placed to allow continued drainage. Most patients experience noticeable improvement within just a few hours.
Seek immediate professional care for any dental abscess or infection.
